Life Not Knife Week

Students taking part in Life Not Knife WeekLast week the events took place each day to mark the college’s campaign against knife crime, Life Not Knife Week.

Film screenings, music performances, a poetry slam and information stands got students and staff talking about the impact of knife crime and how they can help to put an end to it.

There was an opportunity to remember friends lost through crime on a memory board run by the counselling service. The art department invited all staff and students to help make a sculpture from wasted materials.

External organisations including the London Ambulance Service, Crimestoppers and Neighbourhood Sports ran stalls in the main hall. The Metropolitan Police asked people to use stickers to mark places they regard as dangerous in the area.

Chris Preddie’s brother was shot and died. Chris came and spoke to staff and students about what it feels like to lose a brother in this way and gave advice about how to avoid getting involved in crime.

Well done to all staff and students involved in arranging Life Not Knife Week. If you want to get involved in arranging next year’s Life Not Knife campaign email the marketing team, marketing@newvic.ac.uk or pop into F216.

Your views

It’s new to moodle and it’s all about what you think.

This week’s question: what do you think about the college’s Life Not Knife campaign and have you any suggestions for ways that knife crime can be stopped?

Monique Nelson and Honey Adde Alberta Aidoo Gerard Ngawana

“The talk yesterday was inspirational, it made you think about what it would be like if the victims were related to you.

It’s all about code wars and revenge, it’s a continuous cycle which you cannot break.

The only way it changes is as you get older and you begin to do things for yourself as you realise that other don’t do it for you.

The week has been good but we’re not sure if will really change anything, it makes you think but in goes in one ear and out the other for lots of people.”

Monique Nelson and Honey Adde

“It’s been a good week, it’s a really good idea but I am not sure how many people will take it in. It will only stop when people use their own minds to stop, noone else can do it for them.”

Alberta Aidoo

“The week has raised awareness, you can never hear too much about the problem as it has not stopped.

The only way I can think to improve the problem is for there to be more activities to link people rather than separate them.

I think knife crime it is slowly going down a bit but there is still a lot of work to be done.”
